"...but that it is easier to sail many thousand miles through cold and storm and cannibals, in a government ship, with five hundred men and boys to assist one, than it is to explore the private sea, the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean of one's being alone—"

Henry David Thoreau

A Meaningful Life

It is up to us to define, guide and live our lives in a meaningful way. To tell a narrative story through our living; a tale of the values which give our life purpose and make our days something more than the simple passing of time and consumption of pleasures, which in themselves offer no more fulfillment than a warm and momentary distraction from the startlingly apparent evidence that the universe simple does not and cannot care. We must ourselves make life worthwhile, important and worth living.

THE MUSE

My muse is blind, deaf, mute and dead. She is the inorganic fact of reality. The inanimate ambition of entropy. The chill, dark waste between the stars. The uncaring substrate of physics and chemistry; bound, secured and destined towards some emotionless mathematical end.

THE GREAT INDIFFERENCE

The Great Indifference is a perspective which yields an improved understanding of the apparent true nature of the universe. It is a place of clear thought, and relentless truth. The way there is never easy, never marked, and can only be reached in solitude, and when the only chance of return is under the power of one's own volition. What you find there may be worth the journey, even if only you alone can understand or appreciate the prize.

THE GOOD LIFE

The Good Life Meditation is my daily effort of recounting, considering, and developing my personal life objectives and principles. I perform this activity in the morning, usually on my way to work, as a start and readiness to the coming day, and as a reminder of the best life practices I've so far uncovered and made my own. With practice, the effort has become as familiar and refreshing as making and enjoying a hot cup of coffee, leaving me fortified and invigorated for whatever the day may hold.
