A close study of the Torah’s Exodus 20:20 (20:23 in the Christian Bible) indicates that the one exception to the second commandment (“Thou shall not make unto thee any graven image...”) is the production of statues of cherubim to stand at God’s altar. But the cherubim statues must not be made of silver, and must number no more or less than two.
