I had a very productive day in the desert yesterday, beginning and finishing an entire chapter of the new book, which is now more than 50% complete. While working hard below the Writing Bridge, I was kept company by numerous species of desert wildlife which, like me, came to the bridge seeking shelter from the killing inferno beyond the deep shadows below the road. Around 2:00 PM, a steady desert wind picked up, blasting hot air below the rafters like an enormous air dryer. Too hot to write, I slept in the deepest shade remembering the sea, and my youth, and my family, and other remembrance of things far away. When I woke, the wildlife were all gone and I took their cue and set out into the desert to make my way home again, drained and spent and complete. #goingalone
