While enjoying my evening walk just now I passed a house which is significant in my family’s history. About nine months before I went to America to interview (and be initially rejected) for an IT position in California, we’d applied to rent that pink-colored house in the middle of this photo. Emily, Yumiko and I were so excited about the house and we were even planning to adopt a dog if we got it. We didn’t get the house. Our application was rejected—and the three of us were very sad and disappointed.
Half a year later, when I got wind of a chance for us to return to America I jumped on it, and after the second try I landed an entry-level IT position which placed my hands on the bottom rungs of a professional ladder which I’ve been working hard to climb ever since. But, I know with 100% certainty that the incredibly challenging and interesting adventure of the past nine years in the USA would never have happened if we’d landed this house, as our roots then would have been set in Japan too deep to remove, and we’d have never left.
