I talked to a thirty-something year old surfer just now, looking down in the dumps by the stairs. He was dripping wet, watching his four buddies tearing up the outside. He told me “Maybe I’ve lost it..? I couldn’t make it out! The current swept me all the way to Ninth Street.” I told him about the two high school seniors I met yesterday, and how they were swept even further to Seventh Street before they gave up and walked back up the beach. Strapping young guys who surfed here all the time, defeated by the sea. That seemed to make him feel better, knowing it wasn’t just him, and he probably hadn’t really lost it. Though losing it we all must surely do. Though I can say firsthand it’s no big deal losing “it” as there isn’t ever any it to really lose. Take me: I’m getting old and my body can’t do like it once did, though I find my “it” where I can—with reading, and working hard at my job, and loving and caring for my wife and our daughter and our two dogs, and being friendly and nice and telling silly jokes and running into the sea each day expressing all the “it” that I can muster. All the rest is simply beside the point, and was never really it to begin with. It is simply what we make it.
