The Good Life - 01/05/2023 - Another deep breath *

Writer's picture: Kurt BellKurt Bell

Last night, lying in bed, I listened to the sound of the waves collapsing upon the beach. I could hear the peel of big peaks drawing left or right, and the closeout of shorebreak, and every few minutes the cacophony of set waves sweeping over everything. All this from a mile and a half away, the sound seemingly channeled up Main Street from the pier to our little yard at Delaware, just like the Huntington Beach Fourth of July parade which concludes each year before our door. There is also a background sound to the waves, reminiscent of the three degree Kelvin background static which pervades the entire universe, the echo and leftover of our Big Bang creation. The sound of the sea at night is clearest just before dawn, and I know the alarm might soon go off and I must then get out of bed for another day of life—a day pulsing with the activity of email, deadlines, issues and meetings, activity rising and falling like the sea; restless, crashing, loud at times and constant; sometimes sweeping and forever crackling with low static. Day and night then, there’s forever here the sound of the sea.

ABOUT

Going Alone was begun by Kurt Bell in an effort to help others understand and manage  the recognition of the apparent indifference of the universe to our well being, happiness or even our existence, and to find ways to make a good life in spite of this fact.
