Such a nice visit from Emily yesterday. She appeared as from nowhere on a Monday (she’d warned us she was coming the day before, though I’d forgot), sending her mother and me a text message saying ”I’ll be there in thirty minutes” which I didn’t notice for fifteen. And at once she was here. And she set up shop at the sofa and went to work attending classes, doing assignments and calling friends as university students do, while Yumiko and I each attended to our own work. Emily brought such youth and vivacity into our home, which is such a contrast to the settled and sober pace and mood which Yumiko and I maintain during the week. And then she was gone, collecting her things and out the door and off to her young university life and people and events and ways—spilling from our home all full of the charge and energy and courage which I remember in myself from a dim past now gone. As she left I knew the future was good, and in the hands of those whose turn was next, as it always is, each generation giving way to another who sprint from their parent’s door fearless, like they own the world, like they got this. Which they do. They got this.
