Yesterday afternoon was nice. I took half a day off to see my doctor, the best doctor ever. We talked about my awful panic attack a few weeks back and I told him about my decision to quit my job next year and retire to a less stressful way of life. He smiled and said that was good medicine, and he encouraged me to dwell on my plan daily, especially during the hard hours at work in order to help lessen my worry and ensure I make this dream come true. My doctor and I then talked about the real cost of exchanging time for money, the dangerous expense of burning out, and the grave fragility of well being. I left my doctor’s office without any prescription to fill, though our talk did fill me with new confidence to carry on with our next year’s plan, and to begin living a better life today through my actions and resolve. And so I came home from my doctor visit and retreated with my book to the yard, to sit with my dog amidst the flowers, reading and feeling on my skin the warm sunlight and cool sea air while sensing the suddenly slowed passage of time. Thank you doc, for seeing me today and helping me to better sort my mind and align my resolve with what Yumiko and I already know is the right thing to do.
