Warm ocean water… The sea has suddenly warmed. And stepping in up to my ankles yesterday felt like youth found again in an old photo. I remembered who I’d once been, when, in the past, and during my whole long life with the sea. And the feeling lasts—for a bit. It’s been twenty-four hours since I felt the warm sea yesterday, and still that warmth is within me. It’s better than good food or medicine or rest even. Just stepping a few paces into the surf does the trick. Better still the further and deeper I go. And there’s nothing like a plunge through a foaming wave, better still a shallow dive beneath a small, rolling comber—that’s the trick, the stuff of deep, deep living. No wonder I feel so young again. It’s not true, I know. This experience is like the pleasant jolt after good, strong coffee, a real boost and jar to the system, welcome and something needed. So too, walking barefoot into the suddenly warm sea. Bracing, real, yet ephemeral. Summer is coming, and the ocean is the first to tell. Gone are the cold currents of winter. Come now, remove your shoes and walk apace the great warming sea. Wet your toes and ankles or higher still. Come deeper if you dare. This season will never come again. This day, our only opportunity and final chance.
