Driving 50 miles has become an adventure, or misadventure perhaps. This is because I can no longer stay alert while driving, and must pull over to sleep. I can always feel the fatigue coming, and quickly park to rest and be safe.
Yesterdays outing was interesting, as I had to stop at Green River along the 91 freeway in order to doze beside the road. But later, at the Orange Crush, I became so befuddled with fatigue that I wound up in the Departures concourse at John Wayne Airport. And while attempting to extricate myself from that mess, discovered I was driving back up the 91 freeway…returning back the same way I’d just come! What a mess. When I got home, I told Yumiko that I thought my long-distance driving days may be done. It’s simply not safe for me to drive any longer than an hour alone.
My doctor is aware of this issue—along with my other health concerns—and he’s actively helping me to sort things out. But I really need to stop driving alone long-distance, especially on the freeway, as I fear I’m becoming a danger to others. And it’s probably time for me to sell my motorcycle. Those days are certainly done.
My Adirondack chair in the garden may be all I should safely pilot alone anymore. And that’s alright. As I’ve already driven everywhere far in life I’ve ever wanted, or needed, to go.
