Such a nice evening yesterday. After sundown, before dinner, I sat in the yard with my dog and strummed my dad’s guitar while making up songs to whatever came to mind: the sight of a stranger walking quickly by my gate, a big jet roaring low above metropolis, Saturn emerging to shine brighter than every star. Just a few chords are all I need. E, and E-minor are nice—just a steady, rhythmic back and forth strum that can go on all night, as long as the words continue to flow. And some picking too, mostly on the high strings, a steady melody made up myself, with a single word for every note. Never ending. Words without end. It’s interesting how both poetry and music are like a perennial spring found in a desert waste. Never ending. Flowing forth ‘till I’ve had my fill, or until my dear wife calls me to dinner and I gladly wink goodnight to shining Saturn, call my dog and go inside, lock the door to shut out the dark and put away dad’s guitar to get on with my sweet domestic life. But the muse remains outside in the dark, always alone—like I once knew her under that desert bridge in my desert past. Still there. Always silent, invisible and waiting. Not just for me, but for anyone who might simply come.
