As a young man I reacted to the world in nearly thoughtless accord with expectation, attending college (poorly), working hard at my first jobs (with no aim but my next paycheck), and abiding whatever norms were prescribed by authors like Thoreau, Steinbeck and Abbey. Fortunately, those three men prescribed a course which eventually led me to Emerson, Seneca and Aurelius. The experience was a lot like starting out lost in a woods and discovering a thread-like trickling stream which led to a river and then an ocean of principled ideas and perspective grounded in empiricism, reason, truth and virtue. I swim in that sea now—daily in fact. And I see the boundary more clearly now which sensed indifference does prescribe. The Great Indifference. A vast backdrop of emptiness against which a well lived life appears like a small campfire of warmth huddled about with friends, just for an evening. Just for one night.
The Good Life Meditation is my daily recitation and reminder of personal objectives and principles used in pursuit of a purposeful life in spite of a universe of seeming indifference.
