Yesterday, I teetered on the edge of a cliff. I was working with the team to resolve a challenge when I “saw the light” and realized the source of our problem, which is the perennial challenge of Cost, Time and Quality, and the fact that with every project we can only pick two—something MUST then always be sacrificed in favor of our selection. I was then on the edge of a cliff, as reason demanded I now act on my understanding while the momentum of the team carried us along in another direction. I was frustrated being pulled in two directions. And I know it showed. Darn it. So much for self-control.
I then slept poorly on the idea, tossing in bed exploring options, and I think I awoke with a plan. But even if my plan fails, I at least know why we are struggling, and I’m confident the team will agree. And that’s a better place to be, I think—though it’s still the edge of a cliff; but at least we’ll know better where we actually are, with feet now more firmly upon the ground. As it’s good to know the actual reason for the problems we must face.
