I’m tuning into the mark this morning. This happens sometimes, just like the hard days happen sometimes, when we duke it out through difficulty or glide like a bird on better days like today. Nothing is more sure than these cycles of up and down days; which, as Emerson said, tend to “resolve themselves to the average tendency.” There’s the true mark and goal: to lift that ”average tendency” by slight degrees into something better each year than the year before. Not happier, necessarily—though that’s nice, too—but better, where better is an improved alignment between what we value and what we do and produce by way of our living. There’s the truer mark. And that’s what I’m striving to achieve today, which feels higher and better than my usual “average tendency.”
