Moving quick this morning, I’ve got somewhere to go—working from the office in fact, a real treat these days. No, I’m not one for working from home. You can have it. Not for me. Give me my small, simple cubicle, please—the one by the office kitchen, with all the noise and the foot traffic and where I’m square in the middle of the human action. That’s a funny thing to want from a guy who wrote a book about going alone—but that’s the risk of judging a book by its cover or title, as #GoingAlone is only half the story—the other half being #TheGoodLife, which is the social life we build and develop after first going alone and discovering what is really important: people, culture, society, and virtue. And then we turn our lives around and come home from the deep desert wastes, back from Deep Water, home from the dry sands and volcano peaks beyond Siberia Ghost Town, home to the place and the people and family and the community we recognize as our own. And we then take up gladly the responsibility of all that is good and worthwhile towards these ends, towards making our lives useful in improving the well being of ourselves and others. So, it’s no wonder I’d rather work from work than work from home—as there’s no more phoning it in for me.
