After work yesterday I went to the beach to sit on the sand and behold… Waves, as big as a winter storm were marching up from the southern sea, stacking like Titans off-shore before rising into great walls to slam back upon themselves before churning madly onto the shore. The entire sea, the whole of the great Pacific it seemed, was moving like a river to the right of where I sat; northward, driven by such energies as only sunlight turned to wind then become waves might produce; the power of some distant storm made manifest here, before my eyes, like it’s always done through the millions of years before my birth, and will continue to do for millions more after every one of us is gone. And then I went home and sat outside in the yard on the soft, cool grass with my little white dog, watching together the winking on of Venus above that steady sea. And my breath became slow and easy and free. A mere mortal with his dog for a few moments together before the great expanse of waves below and a great ocean of darkness above, pricking through just now with the faint light of another, utterly indifferent world. Such peace. Such peace of mind. And then my sweet wife called me in to dinner, and I went indoors with my dog, locked the door behind us, closed the blinds, and shut out again the great worlds of energy, darkness and night. Night had come. Time for home.
