☀️ The Good Life - 07/29/2023 - Emily’s last year of school

Updated: Oct 19, 2023

Another semester of Emily’s school is paid for. One more to go, and then we’re done! We didn’t save enough for her college when she was little, and it’s been a challenge ever since the college fund ran out. But, we’re almost there! The finish line is now in sight. Emily even told us yesterday that she’d applied to graduate. It seems we’re really going to make it, and I can’t wait to watch Emily accepting her sheepskin. She’ll move into her new apartment soon, right across the street from school. It’s an upgrade from last year’s dorms, and a taste of what her soon adult independence will be like—cleaning, shopping and cooking her own meals and all that.

August then begins, in a sense, our last full year of direct parenting. After that, Yumiko and I are back to something resembling the simpler life we shared long ago when we first met. Back then, our lives were broad yet shallow. Now our lives are broad and very deep—and with depth comes still water, and a tranquility of sorts, and a gentle flowing that lasts for just an age before we one day round a corner to encounter the final rapids and falls which we all must someday meet. Until then, I’m going to do everything I can to just enjoy and savor the now gentle drifting currents and softer flow of age sixty and beyond. A welcome stillness and peace.
