I swam for a very long time in the ocean yesterday. Maybe an hour. There was a strong current sweeping the entire ocean left, and I fought against the current, against the entire leftward sway of the sea, swimming hard to the right, until I at last caught a very large wave and rode it all the way in to the sand. When I stood up, a man wading nearby said “hi!” and then asked me “does the sea here ever calm down?” I told him “no, not often” and that the sea here is usually brimming with strong energies every day of the year. The man said he was from Oklahoma, and that he’d never left Oklahoma his whole life. But here he was, wearing a swimsuit and wading in the sea at Huntington Beach in the middle of summer, and wearing a big smile like a happy boy. He was so very happy to be in the sea. We went back into the ocean together, not far out, just up to our waists. And we jumped together through some small waves and dove together below bigger waves still, laughing and having fun like a couple of kids. I went in to the beach later to towel off and rest. But before leaving to go home, I walked over to where the man from Oklahoma sat with his friends, he was still dripping from the sea while seated on the sand, drying in the warm summer breeze. I wished him well and offered my hope that he and his group might truly enjoy the rest of their time in California. His smile was unchanged, deep and abiding, like the grin of a happy boy, alive and truly enjoying these moments of his life.
