After my evening swim yesterday, I sat alone on the beach watching the day fade while a warm wind blew in from the sea. A man older than me sat nearby, gazing at the far away setting sun. To my left, a young father with his toddler wet their toes together in the cold Pacific Ocean, the child squealing her pleasure at touching the cool water while her dad beamed a smile that only comes to us at life’s sweetest moments. To my right a family of three played with a tiny football, which the father and son tossed while mom held up her long skirt to let the waves wash over her bare legs, gazing, like the old man, at the nothing happening far out at sea. I gave up my plan to open my book to read, and instead simply straightened my back to join the old man and young mother in our watchful, vigil gaze out to sea, hearing the sound of laughter from the father and son at play, and the happy sounds of the toddler together with her dad.
Summer is nearly done… And soon I’ll have this entire shore to myself again at evening each day after work—just me and Angela with her small blue tent, and sometimes Dale passing by with his thoughts of Debbie. And maybe the mermaid-lifeguard will visit? But probably not. As even young beautiful mermaids have their season. But for another few weeks, people like my companions now might still come here to live for a few hours earnestly and deep. And together we’ll celebrate our one chance now to be alive.
